WebFood waste refers to the discard of edible foods at the retail and consumer levels, mostly in developed countries. This food wastage represents a missed opportunity to improve food security and comes at a steep environmental price. The financial costs of food wastage are substantial and amount to about USD 1 trillion each year. WebGlobally, between a quarter and a third of the food produced annually for human consumption is lost or wasted. This equates to about 1 300 million tonnes of food, including 30% of cereals, between 40 and 50% roots, fruits, vegetables and oil seeds, 20% of meat and dairy products and 35% of the fish.
