Went to the shop and picked out a set of 285/70/r17 tires and the guy looked on his computer and said he can't go any bigger than the stock 255/65 tires without a lift or at least a leveling kit. This was a tire shop, not the dealer. WebJan 31, 2005 · I don't have the 4Runner but do have an 05 Tacoma with the 265 65 17 Dunlops. The suspension and clearance issues would be identical on these vehicles. These Dunlops are brutal tires on ice. I've ordered a set of 265 70 17 Geolander AT's for the truck. These are 31.9 inches tall and 10.8 wide.

If my math serves me right, a 285 width tire is about 1.2 inches wider than the stock 255 width tire, which means the tire would stick out 0.6 inches on both outer and inner sides of the tire (assuming you have 255/70R17 now).
